What is EMD update?
Like other Google updates of panda and penguin which have been fighting for the web spam, Matt Cutts announced an another update called EMD update which means Exact match domain e.g. if you are selling Leather Shoe or selling car rental services then your domain must be leathershoe.com and carrental.com which must be counted as an EMD update to filter the spam algorithms. Before, Panda update announced the websites to be filtered or marked as spam with low quality content and Penguin update fights against web spam.
What about periodic updates?
Let us take the Panda example like Google has several filters and it update in a periodic manner. This periodic nature could affect many publishers and thus it works effectively in shifting all the sites that is Google aware of and it filters through the web. The websites who have poor quality content are trapped by Google. The trapping means you could no longer rank the website for generating website revenues. If you website got escaped with panda update then there would be no decrease in ranking and it might gain better results move higher into spots vacated by those Panda has dropped.
This means the filter is not perfect yet and Google keeps on finding for such websites and in the end it shifts all the pages it knows about through an updated Panda filter. These would be the pages which were not caught before. Also, it will free the pages that were caught before if it spots any changes in those pages.
In an important way, the sites themselves get chance to chuck out panda update since each time the filter is used based on their own attempts to improve. It could be like if the website has very poor content can also be escaped and could be no longer trapped. It could be a hit and trial methods for you and every time when panda releases its update then there is always a chance for a fresh start.
How EMD update works?
EMD got its name since it targets the websites with “Exact Match Domains”. Those domains which match the search term which it hopes to find are filtered. This is the exact method to find those websites which are poor in quality but have exact match domain but a common misconception among people lies that Google penalize or will not rank in future those websites which have search terms in their domain names.
You could have many examples of this. A website could have quality content with exact match domain then Google is not supposed to penalize that website. Instead Google is focusing more on the websites like learn-english-today.com which is a made-up example but hopefully gets the point across. This domain has fairly a generic name with many keywords but don’t have any real brand recognition.
People buy domains usually if they consist of phrasal keywords and hope to easily win with no real investment. They put poor quality content and with no decent information or real destination. In this case, people go directly to the site but they don’t get the result they are actually looking for.
