It all depends on how good and productive the comments you are doing. I’ve seen some SEO folks doing blog comments just for link building purpose, which is not fair. Most of those spam comments don’t get approved, and even if they are approved they don’t add value to the post.

Agree with Jaydip & Kaushal, Commenting on Blog will be really helpful if you do it ethically. With the growth of Online Search Market, various black hat & grey hat methods practitioner got a good share in the market & hence the search index got affected by the spam and thats what a normal searcher hat the most.
Guest author’s blog post on this blog is the perfect example of how this relationship in Online media work offline as well

I have different view here for comment posting on other blogs, as we all know that some people are using comment posting as a part of link building. I’ve seen many bloggers allows to post comment by using keywords but they are approving comment based on quality of content. if you are doing commenting for getting good feel or for gaining ranking of your key word then it makes sense. if your comment is different from others in terms of knowledge or sharing some thing that make you out of crowd.

Blog commenting to me is a win – win situation. If I want comments on my own blogs I need to comment on other blogs, this way it will be sort of a community of like minded people. It’s also important as you write that you get backlinks and new visitors / readers to your blog (the marketing effects).
Blog commenting is a way of helping the writer. I usually tell her what I think of the blog post and if it’s the first time I comment I tell her what I think about the blog, and I try to motivate her to keep writing.
Blog comments are very important for bloggers, it’s important to get feedback, good or bad as long as it’s useful feedback.

I’d agree with everything with this post except for external link building. The links built via commenting are not very strong, and if you are just leaving comments with keyword rich names, and not much content, then it may be flagged as spam.
Funny I should find this today. I just found out that my Google ranking dropped down 2 ranks. I’m not very happy about this but hey it went up one time, it’ll go up again! Commenting is really a win-win situation. Thanks for the great article!
